Unripe plantain is the least of what anybody especially the woman in the kitchen who often time fixes the family’s meals would have thought of purchasing when paying the farmer’s market a visit in an attempt to buy foodstuff.

However unripe plantain is embedded with so many nutritional benefits one can’t even imagine not to talk of the amazing things you could do with it in the kitchen.

Have you tried cooking the unripe plantain with fish, vegetables and a dash of oil? Well, we tried it and it was amazing.

In the end, we got a blend of everything or what you would call a balanced diet as it consists of carbohydrates, protein, lipids, vitamin, and minerals. That is the goal, right? To remain healthier and look younger… Consume healthier meals.

Well, here’s one for ya.

Unlike the regularly boiled plantain consumed with sauce, we decided to switch things up a bit with the fish and plantain strips.

The beauty of this meal is how fast it takes to be ready for consumption. The plantain is sliced so thin that it takes less than ten minutes to cook.

Fish and Plantain Strips

Fish and Plantain Strips


  • 2 Whole semi-ripe plantain
  • 1 cup of smoked mackerel fish chunks
  • 3 pieces of tomatoes (Chopped)
  • 2 pieces fresh scotch Bonnet pepper (chopped)
  • 10 pieces Shallots (small onions)
  • 1/4 cup carrots
  • 2 tbsp green peas
  • Thyme
  • Turmeric
  • Scent leaves
  • 2 cooking spoons vegetable oil
  • Seasoning cubes to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • 4-6 cooking spoons of water


  1. Peel, wash and scrape the plantain into strips using vegetable scraper.
  2. Fry the shallots, tomatoes and pepper till soft.
  3. Add the fish, seasoning, herbs and spices and cook for 2 minutes. add the carrots and green peas and cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Add the plantain separating the strips as you add to the pot. Sprinkle in the water.
  5. Cover the pot and cook for about 8-10 minutes to get the plantain cooked and soft
  6. Serve hot.
